### Lesson Plan: System of the Body and Its Functions
#### Grade: Primary 3
#### Subject: Physical and Health Education
#### Duration: 60 minutes
#### Topic: Systems of the Body and Their Functions
---
#### Learning Objectives:
1. **Cognitive**: Students will be able to identify and describe at least four major body systems and their primary functions.
2. **Affective**: Students will appreciate the importance of each body system in keeping them healthy.
3. **Psychomotor**: Students will engage in simple physical activities that demonstrate the functions of various body systems.
---
#### Materials Needed:
- Chart or posters of the human body
- Flashcards with body systems and their functions
- Markers and paper
- Balloons and straws
- Simple anatomical models (if available)
- Music for warm-up activity
---
#### Lesson Outline:
**1. Introduction** (10 minutes)
- **Warm-Up Activity**: Play a short, fun song and lead the children in simple stretching exercises to get them moving.
- **Hook/Engage**: Ask students if they know what keeps their body moving, breathing, and growing. Display a large chart of the human body.
**2. Instructional Input** (15 minutes)
- **Direct Teaching**: Briefly explain that the body is like a machine with different parts working together. Introduce the concept of body systems.
**Key Body Systems:**
- **Circulatory System**: Describes how the heart pumps blood.
- **Respiratory System**: Explains how we breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide.
- **Digestive System**: Discuss how food is broken down and nutrients are absorbed.
- **Musculoskeletal System**: Highlights how bones and muscles help us move.
- Use flashcards and the body chart to emphasize each system.
**3. Guided Practice** (15 minutes)
- **Activity 1: Matching Game**
- Divide the students into small groups.
- Provide each group with flashcards of body systems and their functions.
- Have students match the body system card to the corresponding function card.
- **Activity 2: Demonstration**
- Use balloons and straws to demonstrate how the lungs (part of the respiratory system) work. Students can blow up the balloons and then release the air to see how the lungs expand and contract.
**4. Physical Activity** (10 minutes)
- **Game: Body System Relay**
- Set up stations around the classroom or playground, each representing a different body system.
- At each station, students perform an activity that corresponds with that system (e.g., for the circulatory system, students can "pump" like a heart by hopping on one foot; for the respiratory system, students can take deep breaths or blow paper into the air).
**5. Closure** (10 minutes)
- **Review and Recap**: Gather the students and review the key points about each body system discussed.
- **Question and Answer**: Encourage students to ask questions or share something new they learned.
- **Reflection**: Ask students how each body system helps them in their daily life (e.g., playing, eating, breathing).
**6. Assessment**
- **Formative Assessment**: Observe student participation during activities, matching games, and relay.
- **Summative Assessment**: A short quiz or drawing activity where students label the body systems discussed.
---
#### Homework:
- Draw a picture of one body system and write a sentence about what it does.
#### Additional Notes:
- Ensure to give positive reinforcement and accommodate any student needs.
- Use age-appropriate language and examples that children can relate to.
